Giants GM Sabean has history of bold, successful trade deadline deals

By TED SILLANPAA THE PRESS DEMOCRAT As the San Francisco Giants fade in the National West, fans are increasingly insistent that general manager Brian Sabean do something, do anything, that makes an impact on the club that is clearly in danger of being blown out of the water by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fans are right. The Giants do need big, bold moves to fill many holes. They lack talent to trade to obtain quality players. That angers fans even… Read More »

Warriors mull Kevin Love deal involving Klay Thompson

By TED SILLANPAA THE PRESS DEMOCRAT Klay Thompson’s father Mychal Thompson, a member of the Los Angeles Lakers’ broadcast crew, said Thursday that the Golden State Warriors are near a deal to send his son to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for forward Kevin Love. The elder Thompson, appearing on ESPN LA 710 radio said the report that the Warriors have opted to part with popular and productive guard Klay Thompson and David Lee seems all but set. The Warriors… Read More »

Warriors fans: Spurs show 3 stars no sure thing however . . .

By TED SILLANPAA Golden State Warriors fans should note that it turns out having three big-time stars on one roster doesn’t assure that the path to an NBA championship will be smooth. Bay Area hoop fans should keep all of the following in mind as they lust to get Minnesota power forward Kevin Love to Oakland in trade. Keep in mind, too, that LeBron James could choose to become a free agent this summer. The latter piece of information is… Read More »

Middletown Yankees earn brightest spotlight

The 2014 Middletown Yankees carry a 32-0 record into the Little League Tournament of Champions.

By TED SILLANPAA There are loads of teams walking around these days with youth baseball or softball championship trophies. The Empire has, probably, a half dozen or more Little League baseball programs . . . each with a championship team. (Then there are Cal Ripken League champions, etc.) The Middletown Yankees are the only 2014 Majors Division Little League champion undefeated this season and 59-2 overall the last two years combined. Any team that goes 33-0, playing any game at… Read More »

Why does a black man in hooded sweatshirt strike fear in Mark Cuban’s heart?

By TED SILLANPAA Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban is being hailed by some, questioned by others, for choosing last week to say we all have prejudices. We heard or read his words, but we seem to have missed that the billionaire businessman applied an egregious false equivalency in explaining the type bigotry he said he has, then insisted we all have. Cuban said he’d cross the street at night if he saw a “black kid in a hoodie.” He said,… Read More »

Lee’s key, but Warriors can offer best player T’wolves could get for Love

The Timberwolves need to value David Lee, but they won't be offered a better player than Klay Thompson in trade for Kevin Love.

By TED SILLANPAA Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star forward Kevin Love is interested in being traded to the Golden State Warriors. And, the Warriors do have players of worth to package in a deal. It’s trade talk that’s only going to start if the Timberwolves or another NBA team find real value in Warriors All-Star forward David Lee. If Minnesota has interest in putting Lee on the frontline for the next two seasons and pay him the remaining $30 million on his… Read More »

194 pitches? 15 innings? We don’t need to protect every pitcher

By TED SILLANPAA Rochester High’s Dylan Fosnacht threw 194 pitches in a 15-inning outing Tuesday in the state of Washington. American League Cy Young Award winner David Price and former big league left-hander Tommy John heard about it and insisted Fosnacht’s coach should be fired for putting the youngster at risk of injury. Fosnacht? The kid doesn’t think he needed to be protected. He’s not a prospect. The guy loves his coach Jerry Striegel and feels like working 15 innings… Read More »

Pistons offer Van Gundy full control; Warriors meet with Kerr

By TED SILLANPAA The Detroit Pistons have apparently made Stan Van Gundy their head coach and granted him complete control of basketball operations. Multiple media sources cited unnamed sources late Tuesday reporting that Van Gundy and the Pistons had made a deal. Neither Van Gundy or the Pistons offered comment. Van Gundy remains a candidate for the Golden State Warriors coaching job. Multiple reports indicate that the Warriors interviewed Van Gundy in Florida on Monday and were in Oklahoma City… Read More »

Warriors contact Stan Van Gundy; he’s torn over possible return to NBA

“There have been calls to gauge interest, and until you get a chance to actually talk to somebody, it’s even hard to say if they’re interested or if I would be. Part of me does (want to coach), and part of me doesn’t. We’re so happy in central Florida. It would really have to be a great situation for me to get back in. I miss a lot of it. I miss the competition. I miss the challenge. But I also like the time that I’ve had, so we’ll just have to see what happens.”
Stan Van Gundy, on Warriors coaching vacancy… Read More »
