KT...When Barry scored 25, 30 points a game...led the team in assists...rebounded...and was the leader of that amazing championship team...the last thing I cared about is whether or not he was one of the thousands of basketball players who insist they never committed a foul. I loved Barry's game. And, as I began to see him on TV and hear the media that started telling us what these guys were really like explain he wasn't a "hero" after all ... I became thankful that my other boyhood idols like Willie Mays didn't play when we the media stopped lionizing athletes by writing fairytales. So...anyway...there are still times when I shoot hoops that I wish I WAS Rick Barry. Ted

Brought back a lot of memories, and none of them good. While I was an ardent supporter of the Giants and 49ers from my Humboldt County enclave, I couldn't bear the petulant whining of Richard Francis Dennis Barry III (though I will accept kudos for knowing his whole name).

I remember that season well. "C.J" seemingly hit every open shot that he found. Phil Smith went for 41 in front of my very face one night when I saw the W's beat the Bulls. Wilkes was butter.

Thank you, Ted. In the immortal words of Gene Wilder, "I hate you and your ass face!"

Chuck...Thanks for reading. It's a lot more enjoyable to tell stories that, in this case, remind us of our younger days to try to shine a light on sports today than it is to shout and argue and criticize. (Well, it's more fun for me this way.) I was playing basketball in school back then ... terrible free throw shooter. Terrible! My coach suggested I shoot underhand, like Barry. I became a good free throw shooter. Barry was my favorite player then ... and now. So, anyway, as you said ... memories of our youth. I also think this is instructive for people who will tell us this team can't win...that guy's not good enough, etc. We don't know. That wonderful Warriors team proved we don't know everything. TED

Huzmuh...I appreciate that you'd question "journeyman" versus "past his prime." He had "journeyman" stats for a couple of years at the tail end of his career ... so, I'm going to now take advantage of the magic of the internet and insert a better description of Mullins. Thank you for pointing out your concern like ... a human being and not some goofball who came with both guns blazing. The fact that we're both old enough to remember that team (and that amazing Bulls series in the West finals) buys you all kinds of credibility and respect. Thanks. TED

Not to quibble (well, not too much anyway), but I don't know if I'd used 'journeyman' to describe Jeff Mullins. Certainly past his prime by that time, but the guy was a 20 ppg scorer for several years -- how many journeymen can say that? But what a season, what a team! I actually enjoyed the conference finals more than the finals. Beating the Bulls in Chicago in game six -- still one of my favorite NBA memories. Listened to it on the radio. Bill King.

Ted - You're bringing back fond memories of my youth! :-) I remember that amazing championship sweep well. And let's not forget that no one ... I mean NO ONE ... could shoot free throws like Rick Barry!
